Genesis 6:5-22    Noah & The Great Flood

5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

14 "Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.

17 And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark--you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them."

22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.”  NKJV

Facts revealed:

Y      God was evaluating the course of events on the earth and in doing so He could see the wickedness. But, He went farther and looked directly at the hearts and thoughts of the population because He knows what is the intent of the heart and the thoughts.  [Genesis 6:5, 1 Chronicles 28:9]

Y      God was grieved by what man had made of himself to the point of Judgment.  Notice it was possible to grieve the Spirit of God then as it is now by our wickedness.  [Genesis 6:6, and Ephesians 4:30]

Y      God was displeased to the point of destroying all living things from the face of the earth.

Y      But praise to God, there was one man who saved all of mankind from extinction, because “Noah found favor in the sight of God” -- and human kind was saved from total destruction.

This set a precedent that God will always have a man who will be His and that God will always keep a remnant, even through His Greatest Judgments just as He has said through almost all the prophets.

Y      Noah was one of the three men God said were perfect and could save themselves by their own righteousness. [see Ezekiel 14:12-20]

Y      Noah had three sons who were born to him when he was 500 years old, making them triplets.

Y      The wickedness of man corrupted the earth and filled it with violence.  This is the same reason for the Great Tribulation - - violence will again rule the day as men choose to do what is right in their own eyes and ignore the commandments of God that would provide a long and peaceful life.

Y       Speaking about the land being defiled, God said, “Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.” [Leviticus 18:24-25  NKJV]

Y       In preparation for the destruction of all flesh, God instructed Noah about what he needed to do to keep a remnant alive as He gave instructions concerning the Ark.   Demonstrating that “The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority.”  [2 Peter 2:9-10]

Y      God told Noah that He would bring a flood on the earth to destroy from under heaven and on the earth all flesh in which is the breath of life.

Y      God established a Covenant with Noah to save Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives, and every living thing of all flesh which Noah was to bring with him on the ark to keep them alive.

Y      Noah was to take aboard the ark a male and a female of every kind of creature that was on the earth.

Y      All the creatures, two of every kind would come to Noah to board the ark on their own so Noah did not have to hunt them down and drag them aboard.

Y      Noah was to “gather of all food that is eaten for you and for them.”  As we saw in Genesis 1:29-30, every creature, including man, was vegetarian in diet. There were no carnivorous animals on the earth, as even the lion ate herbs as well as the cattle.  So the food substance Noah was to gather was all fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Y      The food supply needed was to be enough to last them all over a year since they were on board the ark for 375 days.

Y      Noah obeyed and did as God instructed him to do.
