Duties of true believers

The most important duties of the Muslim are faith in Allah and His apostle, prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and pilgrimage to the Sacred House at Mecca built by Abraham for the worship of the One God

Introduction page 2

Duty

My son, be steadfast in prayer, enjoin justice, and forbid evil.  Endure with fortitude whatever befalls you.  That is a duty incumbent on all.

Luqman   31:17

Duties of True Believers

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Ecclesiastes 12:13   KJV

What doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God

Micah 6:8?     KJV

Prayers when unclean

Believers, do not approach your prayers when you are drunk, but wait till you can grasp the meaning of your words; nor when you are unclean - unless you are traveling the road - until you have washed yourselves.  If you are sick or on a journey, or if, when you have relieved yourselves or had intercourse with women, you can find no water, take some clean sand and rub your faces and your hands with it.  Gracious is Allah and forgiving.

An-Nisaa     Women  4:43

Priests to avoid alcoholic drinks when serving in Tabernacle or Temple of God

"Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean,

Leviticus 10:9-10    NKJV

Fighting for the cause of Allah

Do you pretend that he who gives a drink to the pilgrims and pays a visit to the Sacred Mosque is as worthy as the man who believes in Allah and the Last Day, and fights for Allah's cause?  These are not held equal by Allah.  Allah does not guide the wrongdoers.

Those that have embraced the Faith, and left their homes, and fought for Allah's cause with their wealth and with their persons, are held in higher regard by Allah.  It is they who shall triumph.  Their Lord has promised them mercy from Himself, and His pleasure and gardens of eternal bliss where they shall dwell for ever.  Allah's recompense is great indeed.

Say, "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your tribes, the property you have acquired, the merchandise you fear may not be sold, and the homes you love, are dearer to you than Allah, His apostle and the struggle for His cause, then wait until Allah shall fulfill His decree.  Allah does not guide the evil doers.......

Fight against such of those to whom the Scriptures were given as believe in neither Allah nor the Last Day, who do not forbid what Allah and His apostle have forbidden, and do not embrace the true Faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued.

The Jews say Ezra is the son of God, while the Christians say the Messiah is the son of God.  Such are their assertions, by which they imitate the infidels of old.  Allah confounded them!  How perverse they are!

They make their clerics and their monks, and of the Messiah, the son of Mary, Lords besides Allah; though they were ordered to serve one God only.  There is no god but Him.  Exalted be He above those they deify besides Him!...........

At-Touba    Repentance 9:29-31

If you do not go to war, He will punish you sternly and will replace you by other men.  You will in no way harm Him: for Allah has power over all things......

At-Touba    Repentance 9:39

Whether unarmed or well equipped, march on and fight for the cause of Allah, with your wealth and with your persons.  This will be best for you, if you but knew it.....

At-Touba    Repentance 9:41

Those that believe in Allah and the Last Day will not beg you to exempt them from fighting with their wealth and with their persons.  Allah best knows the righteous.  Only those seek exemption who disbelieve in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts are filled with doubt because they doubt, they waver.

At-Touba    Repentance 9:44-45

Reason Abraham was chosen

Genesis 18:18-19

Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him."

NKJV

Leviticus 19:15

15 'You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

NKJV

Deuteronomy 6:25

25 Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us.'

NKJV

1 Kings 10:8-9

8 Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! 9 Blessed be the LORD your God, who delighted in you, setting you on the throne of Israel! Because the LORD has loved Israel forever, therefore He made you king, to do justice and righteousness."

NKJV

Proverbs 2:20-21

20 So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness.

21 For the upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain in it;

NKJV

Proverbs 12:28

28 In the way of righteousness is life,

And in its pathway there is no death.

NKJV

Proverbs 13:6

6 Righteousness keeps him whose way is blameless,

But wickedness overthrows the sinner.

NKJV

Rev 14:12

12 Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

NKJV

True Believers and their rewards

The true believers, both men and women, are friends to one another.  They enjoin what is just and forbid what is evil;  they attend to their prayers, and render the alms  levy, and obey Allah and His apostle.  On these Allah will have mercy.  Allah is mighty and wise.

Allah has promised the men and women who believe in Him gardens watered by running streams, in which they shall abide for ever:   godly mansions in the gardens of Eden: and, what is more, they shall have grace in Allah's sight.  That is the supreme triumph.

At-Touba    Repentance 9:71-72

Reward of Righteousness

Proverbs 14:34

34 Righteousness exalts a nation,

But sin is a reproach to any people.

NKJV

Proverbs 15:9

9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,

But He loves him who follows righteousness.

NKJV

True believers

Allah has purchased from the faithful their lives and worldly goods, and in return has promised them the Garden.  They will fight for the cause of Allah, they will slay and be slain.  Such is the true promise which He has made them in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Koran.  And who is more true to his pledge than Allah?  Rejoice then in the bargain you have made.  That is the supreme triumph.

Those that repent and those that serve and praise Him; those that fast and those that kneel and prostrate themselves;  those that enjoin justice, forbid evil, and observe the commandments of Allah shall be richly recompensed.  Proclaim the good tidings to the faithful.

At-Touba    Repentance 9:111-112

Righteousness and Justice

Proverbs 21:3    NKJV

3 To do righteousness and justice

Is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

Proverbs 21:21    NKJV

21 He who follows righteousness and mercy

Finds life, righteousness and honor.

Isaiah 1:26    NKJV

26 I will restore your judges as at the first,

And your counselors as at the beginning.

Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city."

Make war on the infidels

It is not right that all the faithful should go to war at once.  A band from each community should stay behind to instruct themselves in religion and to admonish their men when they return, so that they may take heed.

Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you.  Deal firmly with them.  Know that Allah is with the righteous.

At-Touba    Repentance 9:122-123

Righteousness brings Peace

Isaiah 32:16-17

16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,

And righteousness remain in the fruitful field.

17 The work of righteousness will be peace,

And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.

NKJV

Paradise

As for those that believe and do good works, Allah will guide them through their faith.  Rivers will run at their feet in the Gardens of Delight.  Their prayer will  be:  "Glory be to You, Lord!"  and their greeting:  "Peace!"  "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the universe" will be the burthen of their plea.

Yunus     Jonah 10:9-10

Paradise

As for those that have faith and do good works, they shall for ever dwell in the gardens of Paradise, desiring no change.

Al-Kahf     The Cave 18:107-108

Paradise for believers

Blessed are the believers, who are humble in their prayers; who avoid profane talk, and give alms to the destitute;  who restrain their carnal desires (except with their wives and slave girls, for these are lawful to them:  transgressors are those who lust after other than these); who are true to their trusts and promises, and diligent in their prayers.  These are the heirs of Paradise; they shall abide in it for ever.

Al-Muminun      The Believers  23:1-11

Paradise

Have fear of Allah, you that have sense and faith.  Allah has sent down to you an exhortation; an apostle proclaiming to you Allah’s revelations in all plainness, so that he may lead the faithful who do good works from darkness to light.  He that believes in Allah and does good works shall be admitted to gardens watered by running streams, where he shall dwell for ever.  A rich provision Allah has made for him.

At-Talaq    Divorce    65:10-11

Paradise

Revelation 2:7

7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." '

NKJV

Revelation 21:1-7    NKJV

21:1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." 5 Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful." 6 And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

New Jerusalem

Revelation 22:1-5    NKJV

22:1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. 5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.

Revelation 22:14    NKJV

14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.

Righteousness Duties

Attend to your prayers morning and evening, and in the night time too.  Good deeds shall make amends for sins.  That is an admonition for thoughtful men.  Therefore have patience; Allah will not deny the righteous their reward.

Hud 11:114-115

Duty

Say:  “None can protect me from Allah, nor can I find any refuge besides Him. My mission is only to make known His messages;  those that disobey Allah and His apostle shall abide for ever in the Fire of Hell.”

Al-Jinn    The Jinn    72:1-28

Duties of Righteousness

Isaiah 56:1-2   NKJV

56:1 Thus says the LORD:

"Keep justice, and do righteousness, For My salvation is about to come, And My righteousness to be revealed.

2 Blessed is the man who does this, And the son of man who lays hold on it; Who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, And keeps his hand from doing any evil."

Reward of the Righteous

Truly none will take heed but the wise:

³      those who keep faith with Allah and do not break their pledge;

³      Who join together what Allah has bidden to be united;

³      Who fear their Lord and dread the terrors  of an evil reckoning;

³      Who for the sake of Allah endure with fortitude.

³      Attend to their prayers;

³      Give alms in private and in public;

³      And who ward off evil with good.

These shall have the recompense of Paradise.  They shall enter the gardens of Eden, together with the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants.

From every gate the angels will come in to them, saying, "Peace be to you, for all that you have steadfastly endured.  Blessed is the recompense of Paradise."

Al-Ra’d     Thunder  13:20-24

Righteousness

Those that have faith and do good works, attend to their prayers, and render the alms levy, will be rewarded by their Lord and will have nothing to fear or regret.

Al-Baqarah    The Cow    2:277

Righteousness of God

Romans 3:21-26    NKJV

21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

1 Peter 1:17-21    NIV

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Ephesians 2:8-10    NKJV

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Prayer times

Attend regularly to your prayers, including the middle prayer, and stand up with all devotion before Allah.  When you are exposed to danger pray on foot or while riding; and when you are restored to safety remember Allah, as He has taught you what you did not know.

Al-Baqarah    The Cow    2:238-239

Prayer times

Recite your prayers at sunset, at nightfall, and at dawn;  the dawn prayer has its witnesses.  Pray during the night as well;  an additional duty, for the fulfillment of which your Lord exalt you to an honorable station.

Al-Israa    The Night Journey  17:78-79

Enjoin Prayer

Enjoin prayer on your people and be diligent in its observance.  We demand of you no provision:  We shall Our self provide for you.  Blessed shall be the end of the devout.

Ta’ Ha’    20:132

Prayer Times

2 Chron 7:14    NKJV

14 If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

1 Timothy 2:8    NKJV

8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18        NKJV

17 pray without ceasing,

18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

John 6:29    NKJV

29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."

Prayer times

But for a Word from your Lord, long since decreed, their destruction in this life would have been certain.  Therefore bear with what they say.  Give glory to your Lord before sunrise and before sunset.  Praise Him night and day, so that you may find comfort.

Ta’ Ha’   20:129-130

Prayer Example

Philippians 1:9-11    NKJV

9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Worship ritual

You that are true believers, kneel and prostrate yourselves.  Worship your Lord and do good works, so that you may triumph.

Fight for the cause of Allah with the devotion due to Him.  He has chosen you, and laid on you no burdens in the observance of your faith, the faith of Abraham your father.  In this, as in former scriptures, He has given you the name of Muslims, so that the Apostle may testify against you, and that you yourselves may testify against your fellow men.

Therefore attend to your prayers, render the alms levy, and hold fast to Allah;  for He is your Guardian.  A gracious guardian and a gracious helper!

Al-Hajj       Pilgrimage  22:77-78

Religious form

Attend to your prayers, render the alms levy, and obey the Apostle, so that you may be shown mercy.

Never think that the unbelievers can escape their fate in this world.  The Fire shall be their home:  an evil end.

Al-Nur      Light 24:56-57

True Believers

Those devoted to prayer are steadfast in prayer;

who set aside a due portion of their wealth for the beggar and for the deprived;

who truly believe in the Day of Reckoning and dread the punishment of their Lord  for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord;

who restrain their carnal desire except with their wives and slave girls, for these are lawful for them:  Transgressors are those who lust after other than these.

Who keep their trusts and promises and bear true witness;

Who attend to their prayers with promptitude.

These shall be laden with honors in fair gardens.

Al-Ma’arij    The Ladders    70:22-35

Prayer model

Matthew 6:5-13    NKJV

5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

10 Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

13 And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Matthew 15:1-9    NKJV

15:1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, 2 "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." 3 He answered and said to them, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.'  5 But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God"-- 6 then he need not honor his father or mother.' Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

8 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' "

Believe, Give, & Fight for cause of Allah

Have faith in Allah and His apostle and give in alms of that which He has made your inheritance; for whichever of you believes and gives in alms shall be richly recompensed.

And what cause have you not to believe in Allah, when the Apostle calls on you to have faith in your Lord, who has made a covenant with you, if you are true believers?

It is He who brings down clear revelations to His servant, so that he may lead you out of darkness into the light.  Surely Allah is compassionate to you and merciful.

And why should you not give to the cause of Allah, when Allah alone will inherit the heavens and the earth?   Those of you that gave of their wealth before the victory, and took part in the fighting, shall receive greater honor than the others who gave and fought thereafter.  Yet Allah has promised you all a good reward;  Allah has knowledge of all your actions.

Who will give a generous loan to Allah?  He will pay him back twofold and he shall receive a noble recompense.

Al-Hadid    Iron    57:7-11

Evangelize

Matthew 28:17-20    NKJV

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Mark 16:15-18    NKJV

15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Right living

This is but an admonition.  Let him who will, take the right path to his Lord.

Your Lord knows that you sometimes keep vigil well nigh two thirds of the night, and sometimes half or one third of it, as do others among your followers.  Allah measures the night and the day.  He knows you cannot tell the length of the vigil, and turns to you mercifully.

Recite the Koran as many verses as you are able; He knows that among you there are sick men and others roaming the land in search of Allah’s bounty;  and yet others fighting for the cause of Allah.

Recite from it, then, as many verses as you are able.  Attend to your prayers, render the alms levy, and give Allah a generous loan.  Whatever good you do you shall surely find it with Allah, ennobled and richly rewarded by Him.  Implore Allah to forgive you; Allah is forgiving and merciful.

Al-Muzzammil   The Mantled One   73:19-20

Right Living

1 Thessalonians 5:12-22    NKJV

12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Duties Right Living

You that are wrapped up in your cloak, arise and give warning.

Magnify your Lord, purify your garments, and keep away from uncleanness.

Bestow no favors expecting gain.  Be patient for your Lord’s sake.

Al-Muddaththir    The Cloaked One    74:1-7

Duties Right Living

Luke 6:27-31    NKJV

27 "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

Duty give Warning

Your duty is but to warn those that fear it.

An-Nazi’at    The Soul Snatchers    79:45

Give Warning

We shall guide you to the smoothest path.  Therefore give warning, if warning will avail.  He that fears Allah will heed.

Al-A’La     The Most High     87:8-9

Duty

Therefore give warning.  Your duty is only to give warning:  you are not their keeper.

Al-Gashiya    The Overwhelming Event    88:21-22

Duty to give Warning

Ezekiel 33:1-9    NKJV

33:1 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 "Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: 'When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman, 3 when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.'

7 "So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you shall surely die!' and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.
